Most of the women we learn about in history fall into the category of Queen and Suffragette. We are taught that some women ruled, most had children and then eventually got the vote. Up until recently, this is the narrative that history has presented to us, but our tours are here to show you there is more to uncover. Concentrating on the men in history is half the story. Women were not just passive spectators of history; they actively changed and affected it. They worked as politicians, campaigners, reformers, nurses, writers, factory workers, prostitutes, teachers, doctors... the list is endless.
Now more than ever is an exciting time for Women’s History in London, Women from all walks of life are being discussed, More books are being published, more films are being made, more speeches are being given and more statues are being unveiled and campaigned for. Our world today is built upon the actions of these women, in London our statues, memorials and historical narrative do not yet reflect this. Hopefully our Women in History Walking Tours will help to bridge this gap.
